Art of Shopping |
 |
The
Art of Shopping is an event exploring the parallels between the
art and consumer markets, displaying Art in retail establishments
in Bath. ‘Art in retail business serves the same function
as colour for flowers and plumage for birds; it is a means of
attraction.’ Merging art and commerce produces a changed
environment and by creating similarities both the commercial and
art worlds are attracting new audiences and bringing art to a
wider public audience. ‘The space where art works are displayed
is altogether the space of interaction, and the space of openness
that ushers in all the dialogue.’ In a world where society
has become overwhelmed with images, everything has become immediate
and the object is consumed as a possible identity. |

D*Frost
are a popular collective who work around notions of consumerism,
recycling, pop culture and our wasteful modern habits. Using old
and discarded fridge doors as a canvas, intricate stencils are
spray-painted on to the surfaces to create amusing, thought-provoking
and highly crafted pieces. Proving popular in London and Bristol,
D*Frost were included in Tristan Manco's seminal book 'Stencil
Graffiti'. Brand new work will be created around the theme of
self-portraiture and self-representation, using stencils, model-making
and discarded white goods. |

Drop
Frame will present a series of animation, visual and video art
during the visual art fringe festival in Moss of Bath window (the
lower borough walls side). A highlight will I’m sure be
the long awaited south west premier of ‘foolish films collective’
2004 remake of the classic 1958 ‘The Fly’, whilst
Tova Holmes fuses carefully choreographed performance and video.
Akiko and Masako Takada focus on inanimate objects and bring them
to life via the medium of video; well
observed short and sensitive pieces, and many other delights.
The screens at Moss will also serve as an information point keeping
visitors updated with information on other events over the fortnight. |

Sweets:
appealing, moreish and almost entirely devoid of nutritional
value. You may not need them, but you want them… a fun
and eclectic exhibition of fine art ‘sweets’, nodding
(with tongue in cheek) to questions of contemporary consumer
values. Original pieces, small, inexpensive, irresistible and
essentially functionless: the morsels on display will include
alternative Bath souvenirs, postcards, Russian boxes, Squirrel
Mafia chocolate sculptures, crocheted strawberries and prints
on paper doillies.
Featuring
A-Mart and Here Gallery concessions.
